Nato: June 30, 1930 – Gastonia, North Carolina, United States
Thomas Sowell is an influential American economist, social theorist, and author whose work spans economics, race, history, and social policy. A senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, he has written over forty books, including Basic Economics and Black Rednecks and White Liberals, and received the National Humanities Medal in 2002.
Thomas Sowell was born in 1930 in Gastonia, North Carolina, to a family of black sharecroppers. His early life was marked by poverty and family upheaval; his father died before he was born, and he was subsequently raised by his great-aunt in Charlotte before moving to Harlem, New York City. Sowell’s academic promise emerged despite a turbulent youth, as he learned to read by age four and gained admission to New York’s elite Stuyvesant High School. However, mounting family tensions led to his dropping out at seventeen and supporting himself through various jobs in Harlem.
