Biography & Author's Journey

Robert I. Sutton was born and raised in the United States, developing an intellectual curiosity early in life that led him to the University of Michigan, where he earned a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology. His academic journey found a permanent home at Stanford University, where he has served since 1983, initially as Professor of Management Science & Engineering and, as of 2023, Professor Emeritus. Sutton’s formative years were marked not just by disciplinary excellence, but by an eagerness to explore the intersection of theory and real-world organizational dynamics, which would become a hallmark of his career.
