Born: November 26, 1954 – Chicago, Illinois, United States
Leonard Mlodinow is an American theoretical physicist, mathematician, and author renowned for his accessible science writing. He has authored several bestsellers, including The Grand Design (with Stephen Hawking), Subliminal, and The Drunkard’s Walk. His works have won awards, been translated widely, and significantly popularized scientific and mathematical concepts.
Leonard Mlodinow was born on November 26, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to Jewish parents who survived the Holocaust. His father endured more than a year in the Buchenwald concentration camp and was active in the Jewish resistance in Częstochowa, Poland, while his mother was interned in a labor camp in Poland. This early exposure to resilience and history shaped Mlodinow’s intellectual curiosity and determination. Growing up, he demonstrated keen interest in both mathematics and chemistry; in high school, he was tutored in organic chemistry by a university professor. The pivotal moment steering him toward physics came during a semester on a kibbutz in Israel, where he studied the only English-language book available—Richard Feynman’s lectures—which ignited his passion for theoretical physics.
