Nick Lane

Nick Lane is a British biochemist and Professor of Evolutionary Biochemistry at University College London, renowned for his research on the role of energy in evolution and the origin of life. He is the author of five acclaimed books, including The Vital Question and Life Ascending, which have won major science awards and been translated into over 25 languages.

Biography & Author's Journey

Nick Lane, born in the United Kingdom in 1967, grew up with a curiosity about the living world that eventually steered him towards biochemistry. He earned his B.Sc. at Imperial College London and completed his Ph.D. in 1995 at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School, researching ischemia-reperfusion injury in the context of organ transplantation. After early laboratory work, Lane sought a broader impact and transitioned to roles as a science and medical writer, honing a direct, engaging communication style during his years in medical communications and multimedia. This period of writing not only developed his narrative skills but also set the stage for his future as a widely respected science author.
