Adele Faber is an American author and educator best known for co-authoring influential parenting and communication guides with Elaine Mazlish, including How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk and Siblings Without Rivalry. Her work on parent-child communication has been widely taught and translated internationally.
Adele Faber was an American author and educator whose work helped redefine how adults speak to children. Born in the Bronx in 1928, she grew up in a Yiddish-speaking home and developed an early attachment to books; according to her family’s obituary, her father teasingly called her “The Book” because he so often found her absorbed in reading. She studied theater and drama at Queens College, earned a master’s degree in education from New York University, and taught New York City high school students for eight years. Those experiences gave her an unusual blend of classroom realism, literary sensitivity, and stagecraft. A major turning point came when she and Elaine Mazlish studied with child psychologist Haim Ginott and later taught at The New School for Social Research and at Long Island University’s Family Life Institute, where they began translating child-development ideas into language parents and teachers could use in ordinary life.
