Gary Chapman is an American author, counselor, and radio talk show host best known for developing the "Five Love Languages" framework that explores how individuals express and receive love. His landmark book, The Five Love Languages, has sold over 11 million copies, been translated into dozens of languages, and transformed relationship counseling worldwide.
Gary Chapman was born in 1938 in the close-knit community of China Grove, North Carolina, where he was shaped by a stable and supportive home anchored in faith, discipline, and purposeful living. The son of a pastor, Chapman observed the daily rhythms of church, school, and parental responsibility, laying a foundation for his lifelong commitment to helping others navigate the complexities of relationships. Influenced by early experiences in his local church and formative lessons learned from his parents, Chapman pledged himself to Christian service as a teenager. His academic path took him to the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago for Christian ministry, followed by studies in anthropology at Wheaton College and Wake Forest University, and finally a Ph.D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Along the way, he complemented his education with counseling courses, which foreshadowed the central role relationships would play in his later work.
