While outsiders might assume the military operates purely on Command & Control, insiders like General Martin Dempsey call trust "the secret sauce of the military." General Stanley McChrystal's mantra-"If, when you get on the ground, the order that we gave you is wrong, execute the order we should have given you"-demonstrates how extending trust empowers soldiers to make better decisions. Perhaps the most significant role anyone can play is that of a "transition figure"-someone who changes the trajectory of another person's life. Victor Hugo's Les Miserables illustrates this through Bishop Myriel, who sees potential in Jean Valjean despite his criminal past. The bishop's mercy and belief transform Valjean, who then becomes a transition figure for countless others-financing orphanages, hospitals, and schools, and becoming a devoted father to Cosette.

The New Way to Lead in a New World

Erik Weihenmayer's historic achievement as the first blind person to summit Mount Everest exemplifies Trust & Inspire leadership in action. Despite the staggering odds, Erik succeeded through extraordinary teamwork built on trust. As Erik improved, eventually moving from Base Camp to Camp 2 faster than most sighted climbers, he inspired his teammates who in turn became better guides. When expedition leader PV became ill with malaria and had to turn back, the team's shared leadership allowed them to continue. Facing a storm without their leader, they chose to press on, putting aside individual summit ambitions to support Erik's goal. Remarkably, all nineteen team members (except PV) reached the summit-making it one of the most successful Everest expeditions ever. Their success embodied the fundamental Trust & Inspire beliefs: seeing greatness in others, treating people as whole beings, elevating caring above competing, practicing leadership as stewardship, and creating enduring influence from the inside out. Through modeling (demonstrating credibility and moral authority), trusting (unleashing potential), and inspiring (connecting to purpose), they achieved the extraordinary. As Erik said, "What's within you is stronger than what's in your way... everybody has a yearning for greatness inside of them." When we model, people think "I want to be like that person." When we trust, people think "I want to deliver for that person." When we inspire, people think "I want to contribute with that person." This is the new way to lead and a better way to live: Trust & Inspire.
