Robert A. Heinlein was born in Butler, Missouri, in 1907 and grew up largely in Kansas City in a large Midwestern family whose habits of thrift, discipline, and self-reliance would remain visible in his fiction. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1929 and served as a naval officer until illness forced his retirement in 1934, an abrupt change that became one of the defining turns of his life. He studied mathematics and physics at UCLA without taking a degree, worked in several jobs, and briefly engaged in California politics before fiction emerged as the career that matched both his technical cast of mind and his appetite for large social questions.
