Born: September 1, 1943 – Port of Spain, Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago
Steven Pressfield is an American author renowned for historical fiction and nonfiction, particularly on themes of ancient warfare and creative struggle. His best-known works include Gates of Fire, The Legend of Bagger Vance, and The War of Art, which have sold millions worldwide and influenced military and creative communities.
Steven Pressfield was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in 1943 while his father served in the U.S. Navy, later graduating from Duke University in 1965 before entering the U.S. Marine Corps as an infantryman. His early adulthood was marked by an unconventional, often tumultuous path—across nearly three decades prior to his literary breakthrough, Pressfield cycled through a remarkable 21 jobs in 11 states, including stints as a copywriter, schoolteacher, bartender, truck driver, oilfield worker, and screenwriter. The challenges of these years, which included periods of homelessness and persistent self-doubt, would deeply inform his subsequent philosophy and writing.
