Kurt Vonnegut Jr. was an American novelist and essayist known for satirical, humanist fiction that fused war, science fiction, and dark comedy. His best-known books include Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat’s Cradle, and Breakfast of Champions. A major postwar literary voice, he became a bestselling author whose work remains widely taught and translated.
Kurt Vonnegut Jr. was born in Indianapolis in 1922 into a prominent German American family whose fortunes declined during the Great Depression, an early experience that sharpened his lifelong suspicion of status, money, and social pretense. He attended Shortridge High School, where he wrote for the student paper, and then studied biochemistry at Cornell University while contributing to The Cornell Daily Sun. The decisive turning point of his life came during World War II. Serving in the U.S. Army, he was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and survived the firebombing of Dresden as a prisoner of war in an underground slaughterhouse. That experience became the moral and imaginative center of his later work.
