Irvin D. Yalom is an American psychiatrist and emeritus professor at Stanford University, renowned for his influential work in existential psychotherapy and group therapy. His landmark texts—including The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy and Love's Executioner—have become standard references worldwide, and his bestselling fiction explores philosophical and psychological themes for a broad audience.
Irvin D. Yalom, born in Washington, D.C. in 1931 to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, grew up above his family’s grocery store in a working-class neighborhood, where his early fascination with books presaged a life devoted to intellectual inquiry and human understanding. Encouraged by his family’s emphasis on education, Yalom attended George Washington University, earning his BA in 1952, and then received his MD from Boston University School of Medicine in 1956. His medical training continued at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was introduced to group therapy, a field in which he would later become a world authority. After a period of Army service in Hawaii, he joined the faculty at Stanford University in the early 1960s, a turning point that set the stage for both his academic and literary accomplishments.
