Christopher Hitchens was a British-American author, journalist, and literary critic noted for his provocative writing on politics, religion, and literature. Biography & Author's Journey

Christopher Eric Hitchens emerged as one of the most widely recognized and controversial public intellectuals of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Born in Portsmouth, England, in 1949, Hitchens grew up in a family shaped by his father's naval career and his mother's ambition for her children to rise through education. He attended The Leys School in Cambridge and then studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Balliol College, Oxford, where he became involved with the International Socialists, foreshadowing his initial commitment to radical politics.

Quotes

quote
That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence
-God Is Not Great
quote
Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are god. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are gods
-The Portable Atheist
quote
Human decency is not derived from religion. It precedes it
-God Is Not Great
quote
Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the 'transcendent' and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you
-Letters to a Young Contrarian
quote
Everybody does have a book in them, but in most cases that's where it should stay
-Hitch-22: A Memoir
quote
Faith is the surrender of the mind; it's the surrender of reason, it's the surrender of the only thing that makes us different from other mammals. It's our need to believe, and to surrender our skepticism and our reason, our yearning to discard that and put all our trust or faith in someone or something, that is the sinister thing to me
-God Is Not Great
quote
We keep on being told that religion, whatever its imperfections, at least instills morality. On every side, there is conclusive evidence that the contrary is the case and that faith causes people to be more mean, more selfish, and perhaps above all, more stupid
-God Is Not Great
quote
The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks
-Letters to a Young Contrarian
quote
What is it you most dislike? Stupidity, especially in its nastiest forms of racism and superstition
-Hitch-22: A Memoir
quote
To terrify children with the image of hell, to consider women an inferior creation—is that good for the world?
-God Is Not Great
