John M. Gottman is an American psychologist and relationship researcher known for decades of longitudinal studies on marriage, conflict, and emotional connection. He co-authored The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, and his research-based findings have strongly influenced couples therapy, marriage education, and the scientific study of relationships worldwide.
John M. Gottman built his career by joining mathematical training to the study of intimate relationships. He studied mathematics and physics at Fairleigh Dickinson University, earned a master’s degree at MIT, and completed graduate work and a doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Wisconsin. That combination of quantitative and clinical thinking shaped the turn that defined his career: in the 1970s he began systematically observing couples, and in 1986 that work crystallized in the University of Washington’s “Love Lab,” where relationship behavior was studied through direct observation and physiological data. He later became Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Washington and co-founded both The Gottman Institute and Affective Software with Julie Schwartz Gottman. Over the course of that career, he has authored or coauthored more than 250 academic articles and more than 50 books. ((https://locator.apa.org/profile/john-gottman?utm_source=openai))
