An Oklahoma native, Jennifer Lynn Barnes wanted to be a writer for almost as long as she could remember, and she entered publishing unusually early. She wrote her first published novel at nineteen and sold her first five books while still in college, beginning a career that developed alongside a serious academic life. Barnes studied cognitive science at Yale, continued her training at Cambridge as a Fulbright Scholar, and later earned her PhD from Yale in 2012. That combination of literary ambition and behavioral science became the defining pattern of her career. For many years she taught psychology and professional writing at the University of Oklahoma before leaving academia in 2022 to focus squarely on fiction.
