Dan Brown is an American author renowned for his bestselling thriller novels, particularly the Robert Langdon series, which includes Angels & Demons and the global phenomenon The Da Vinci Code. His books blend historical symbolism and conspiracies, have sold over 250 million copies, and have been translated into dozens of languages, shaping modern popular fiction.
Dan Brown, born in Exeter, New Hampshire in 1964, grew up in an intellectually vibrant household as the son of a mathematics professor and a church organist. Raised on the Phillips Exeter Academy campus, he absorbed the paradoxical interplay of science and religion—a dynamic that would later become a hallmark of his novels. Brown studied at Phillips Exeter and Amherst College, graduating in 1986 before initially pursuing a career as a songwriter in California. Although his musical ambitions yielded modest results, a pivotal shift occurred when he began teaching English and creative writing at Phillips Exeter, where a Secret Service investigation of a student for a joke email spurred his fascination with intelligence agencies and secret societies.
