Born: September 20, 1948 – Bayonne, New Jersey, United States
George R.R. Martin is an American novelist and screenwriter known for epic fantasy, science fiction, and television writing. He is best known for A Song of Ice and Fire, adapted as HBO’s Game of Thrones, and has won multiple Hugo, Nebula, and Emmy Awards, with his books selling tens of millions of copies worldwide.
George R.R. Martin was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, in 1948, the son of a longshoreman, and began writing almost as soon as he could imagine worlds, first selling monster stories to neighborhood children for pennies. At Northwestern University he studied journalism, earning a B.S. in 1970 and an M.S. in 1971, and his first professional fiction sale, “The Hero,” came at the same moment his adult career was beginning. After alternative service with VISTA, chess work, and teaching in Iowa, he became a full-time writer in 1979, carrying with him both a reporter’s instinct for detail and a lifelong attachment to fandom.
