Our responsibility as minority leaders is demonstrating the value in our difference without burying personal identity and cultural distinctiveness. As a minority leader, I had to decide how to present myself authentically while navigating stereotypes. Rather than mimicking my predecessors' confrontational tactics, I developed my own effective approach. I deliberately disappointed Democratic expectations for dramatic displays, instead using carefully crafted press releases and incisive debate skills. Though still sometimes critiqued as "cold and aloof" (while white men with the same qualities are seen as "composed"), I've learned to focus on my intentions, methods and results rather than worrying if I'm "black enough" or "feminine enough." Finding balance between fitting in and authenticity requires being clear about how you wish to be seen while bringing forth who you really are. Self-doubt whispers warnings about risks: reach too far and lose what you have; hesitate and lose everything. When I first ran for state office in 2005, I discovered my weaknesses despite strong qualifications. Having never built social relationships with incumbent legislators, I lacked their endorsements as validators to voters. Instead of following the traditional path, I leveraged my fundraising strength to hire local community members who introduced me door-to-door, finding success without the usual ladder. Peer mentorship is equally valuable-like Jess and Patrick sharing salary information across competing companies, or my partnership with Lara Hodgson that became my informal MBA. To build an effective mentorship network, include advisers with contrasting backgrounds who offer divergent perspectives. Add people with skills you admire, even from different fields. The responsibility falls on you as the mentee to create the mentorship you want-believe people who offer help, but make it easy for them by scheduling regular check-ins, preparing specific questions, and asking directly for what you need. When creating a path to power, we must inventory what we have: rules we can manipulate, overlooked resources, and opportunities to enhance. My success often comes from taking on challenges others avoid because the risk seems too high and the reward unclear.

First things first means prioritizing what matters most to you and believing there's no wrong answer. The binary of work versus life misses the point-either can be hard work. My siblings exemplify distinct ways of crafting priorities: Jeanine balances her biology career with family life; Walter fights for sobriety from prison while maintaining relationships; Richard excels as father and husband while helping troubled children; Leslie serves as a federal judge while maintaining distant friendships; Andrea mentors first-generation college students while chairing committees and writing books. For me, I maintain a spreadsheet of life goals, most on track except for personal relationships. I've faced questions about my single status-some kind, others accusing me of prioritizing professional goals. But I decided years ago to ignore society's arbitrary standards for successful womanhood. During my third year at Yale Law School, I chose to write my first novel while classmates focused on clerkships and job offers. Change is disruptive but inevitable, and we're responsible for shaping new power. Our mission is expanding leadership across diverse backgrounds, but we can't do it alone-change needs allies. When Cosmopolitan profiled my gubernatorial bid in 2017, the reporter provocatively opened by discussing my potential presidential run in 2028. Politics 101 says never admit to wanting the presidency, and Republicans called my aspiration "bizarre." When asked, I chose honesty over the code of silence that holds women and people of color back from claiming the right to even think about running for our nation's highest office. When criticism came, something remarkable happened: allies defended me without my asking.
