Capítulo 1
Unleashing Your Divine Power: A Journey of Transformation
When Sarah Jakes Roberts speaks about power, she isn't talking about domination or control. She's talking about something far more profound - the divine capacity within each of us to transform our lives and impact the world around us. "Power Moves" has become a cultural phenomenon, resonating with celebrities like Ciara and Kerry Washington who have praised its transformative message. The book has sparked conversations across social media platforms about authentic power and spiritual growth, with thousands sharing how its principles have helped them break free from limiting beliefs. What makes this work particularly compelling is Roberts' ability to blend biblical wisdom with practical application, creating a roadmap for anyone feeling stuck, powerless, or disconnected from their purpose. Her approach has revolutionized how many view the intersection of faith and personal development.
Capítulo 2
When Power Goes Missing: Recognizing the Disconnect
Power can be stripped away without us even noticing, like a pickpocket on a bustling street or a slowly dimming light we fail to notice until darkness surrounds us. When rejection, betrayal, or fear takes our power, we often cling to external markers like status, achievements, or social media validation rather than focusing on who we can become. Like a television that's plugged in but not functioning, many of us have access to power but something internal prevents us from converting it into action. We might have impressive credentials, supportive relationships, or financial resources, yet still feel powerless to effect meaningful change in our lives or communities. The issue isn't access to power but converting that potential into tangible function.
We're all born with innate power - just watch how babies disrupt everything around them without apology, commanding attention and care through pure authenticity. Our power diminishes through lifelong struggles with expectations from family, friends, society, and systems that divide our confidence and vision. Cultural messaging, educational systems, workplace dynamics, and even well-meaning advice often erode our natural sense of agency. Signs of power loss include habitually conforming to ideas that contradict our beliefs, feeling resentful of others' self-expression, overreacting to trivial issues, choosing to appease others rather than advocate for ourselves, and constantly seeking external validation before making decisions.
Genesis tells us we're made in God's image - not physically, but spiritually and in creative capacity. Yet our inner lives often feel like a messy mixture of prayers, fears, hopes, and insecurities rather than divine reflection. We struggle with competing voices: societal expectations, family traditions, personal ambitions, and spiritual calling. This messiness traces back to when humanity's focus shifted from God-consciousness to self-consciousness, applying pressure to our power flow. Every generation since must clean up this generational messiness while creating new messes of their own through cultural shifts, technological advances, and evolving social norms.
When God created humanity, He envisioned us immediately operating in power, using words like "subdue" and "dominion" - we were designed to reflect His thoughts and ways through creativity, leadership, and stewardship of creation. Though the gap between our current state and God's image seems vast, it isn't insurmountable. Each day offers another opportunity to better reflect God's character through intentional choices, authentic expression, and purposeful action. The journey to reclaiming power isn't about fighting for something new but returning to authenticity in a world that values conformity. This means recognizing when we've given our power away, understanding the specific circumstances that diminished it, and deliberately choosing to realign with our divine design rather than societal expectations.
Capítulo 3
Transforming "Can't" into "Can": The Power of Possibility
We often don't lack power in every area of life, but underperformance in one area dominates our overall self-perception. Like cars parked in different spaces representing our various roles, we may have a full tank in leadership but run empty in friendship. The frustration comes from experiencing power in one area while feeling stagnant in another.
We only think we can't do something when we lack personal evidence of turning a can't into a can. My "toxic trait" is believing I can do anything with the right resources. Nothing in my life changed until I shifted from being can't-focused to can-focused. Often, our can'ts disguise our wants-whether practical limitations like finances or emotional barriers like fear of heartbreak. When our can'ts overpower our wants, we're stuck.
Confessing our true desires to God is essential; He can't remove from our hearts what we won't confess with our mouths. Sometimes, what we desire aligns perfectly with God's plan for us. When we want the same things as God, we tap into limitless power. Even on days when we're spiritually "low-charged," brief prayers throughout the day provide the necessary recharge.
A relationship that requires perpetual overexertion is actually a hostage situation. Whenever we allow others to settle on a false idea of who we are, we become imposters. This becomes especially complicated when we're celebrated for our inauthentic selves. Like Adam and Eve who relinquished power to the very serpent they had authority over, we often surrender power to things we could control.
The fear of change frequently outweighs our fear of stagnation. With God, we change our way into power by modeling Jesus - the disciples walked with power before walking in power. Power isn't about constant strength but showing up authentically, even when that version differs from who you were previously. Beneath most can'ts lies a feeling we're trying to avoid-embarrassment, failure, disappointment. By identifying and grieving what we wanted but didn't get, we create space for God to show us what He provided instead.
Capítulo 4
Living with Integrity: Aligning Values and Actions
I discovered Chick-fil-A's remarkable consistency in responding to "thank you" with "my pleasure"-delivered with such genuine enthusiasm it feels like fulfilling your order is their life's purpose. This consistency creates an expectation so strong that when one employee broke protocol with a mere "you're welcome," I felt genuinely disappointed. Unlike other restaurants where brand integrity centers on consistent food quality, Chick-fil-A extends theirs to the entire customer experience.
This reflects intentional leadership that maintains small, seemingly inconsequential touches even through massive growth. Their commitment to being known not just for food but for faith and kindness requires deliberate integration of these values at every customer touchpoint. Like any successful organization, they likely evaluate their internal systems against their core values-principles that don't restrict but serve as measuring sticks for alignment with founding principles.
One of our greatest challenges in becoming a force is constantly being told what to value and how to think. Many of us collect supplements based on social media recommendations or form opinions from comment sections before developing our own thoughts. We're wired to consume information without marinating in it first. If you don't know who you are and what you believe, others will deposit their views into your experience.
I believe everyone should have three to five core values that appear in everything they do-mine include honor, integrity, accountability, and humility. Your values may differ from mine and will evolve with life stages through settling and shedding. After my divorce at twenty-three, intentional motherhood and independence became my core values. When I remarried, independence became a wrestling match-there's no fiercer wrestler than a woman who fought trauma to become independent but must now trust she's more powerful as a unit than alone.
My relationship with God shapes my values through a heart posture that asks, "What do You need me to see and who do You need me to be?" This openness allows God to deposit what I should value. We navigate two types of values: staple values (constants like our relationship with God) and situational values (specific to life stages). When you lean into God's vision for your values, you position yourself to access your most powerful version for the task at hand. What you value determines how you show up, which determines what doors open to you.
Capítulo 5
Examining Your Internal Systems: The Ecosystem of You
It would seem strange if someone made the same meal every day-until you realized they were simply using what ingredients were available in their pantry. Like a college student eating ramen nightly, it's not about preference but access. When you're hungry for a version of yourself you can envision but not access, you must not only change your appetite by cultivating core values, but also change what's in your pantry by implementing systems that make those values attainable.
Your comfort zone was constructed by an architect named trauma. The plans are clear: mitigate any possibility for emotional, physical, mental, or spiritual damage by any means necessary. Asking someone to abandon their comfort zone means asking them to surrender safety. When survival instincts designed your comfort zone, they noted how certain interactions made you feel safe or alone, determined paths for navigating relationships, and built walls that sometimes blocked helpful people.
Beneath whatever you're trying to break free from lies a virus distorting your confidence. Genesis 3 had generational implications not just because sin entered the world, but because it inserted a virus seeking to lead you to shame, humiliation, fear and rejection-a system making connection with God unnecessarily difficult. When we're proud of systems, we call them traditions; when haunted by them, generational curses.
Your internal systems of heart, mind and soul determine your role in external systems. Think of it as an ecosystem-"a community of living organisms that interact with each other in a specific environment." Like the ocean with its thousands of species and water circulation systems all working in tandem, your individuality interconnects with the ecosystems of family, friends, community, and professional ambitions.
To overcome powerlessness, you must examine the systems operating in your life. Work backward by identifying moments when your power feels zapped-whether abandoning new habits when stressed, hesitating to create content, or avoiding difficult conversations. If understanding your own system proves difficult, examine your family's patterns around disappointment, anger, and expectations. Unless you've consciously disrupted these inherited systems, they likely shape your current behavior.
Capítulo 6
Breaking Free Through Belief: The Power of Faith
The systems keeping you stagnant and ashamed can only be rendered powerless when stronger, more powerful beliefs are introduced. Simply knowing truths like "God loves me regardless of relationship status or professional success" isn't enough-your choices must reflect these beliefs for real change to occur. When you truly grasp that you are inescapably loved, valued and seen, it releases a dormant power within you that breaks crippling systems. This transformation begins when we start questioning the validity of long-held limiting beliefs and replace them with truth-anchored convictions.
Breaking free from oppressive systems requires more than rebellion-it demands a mission worth defying the system for. Jesus didn't break Old Testament customs to be rebellious; His mission was restoring humanity's connection with God. Like Esther, who risked everything by revealing her Jewish identity to save her people, we must choose authenticity over false safety. Consider Daniel, who continued praying despite the king's decree, or Paul and Silas who sang hymns in prison - their actions weren't mere defiance but expressions of unshakeable faith. God doesn't want our accolades-He wants us to surrender the limiting beliefs that keep us from Him.
Our perceived flaws and fragilities are precisely where God's power can dwell. The woman who touched Jesus' hem discovered it wasn't her action but her faith that healed her. Similarly, Moses' stuttering didn't prevent him from leading an exodus, and David's youth didn't disqualify him from facing Goliath. The question isn't what we need to do to break cycles, but what we need to believe-or stop believing. Every breakthrough begins with a belief breakthrough.
Moving from self-sabotage to system-sabotage requires faith-not just what you believe but who you believe. My relationship with God began with genuine hunger, not mere curiosity. Prayers that once started with "God, if You're still..." transformed into seeking God for who He is, not just what He could do for me. This shift from transactional to transformational faith marks the beginning of authentic spiritual growth and system-breaking power.
God isn't random-everything He created serves a purpose, including you. Finding God requires intentional focus, like playing "Where's Waldo?"-recognizing His character in daily moments, from a stranger's kindness to a transformative message. Scripture reveals God as healer, provider, and companion, qualities we experience as divine winks in our lives. These manifestations might appear as unexpected financial provision, timely words of encouragement, or doors opening when all seemed lost. As you break from comfortable but toxic systems, your relationship with God becomes your compass, pushing you toward dimensions of power you never thought possible. This journey of faith requires daily choices to trust God's character over circumstantial evidence, believing He is working even when we can't see immediate results.
The process of breaking free through belief isn't just about mental assent to truth - it's about allowing that truth to reshape your entire worldview and decision-making process. When you begin to see yourself through God's eyes rather than through the lens of broken systems, you access a courage that transcends human limitations and a peace that defies logical explanation.
Capítulo 7
Becoming a Solution: From Preparation to Activation
In 2020, the car market flipped when production halted and used cars became appreciating assets. While searching for an SUV during the market's return to normal, I faced inflated used car prices. After nearly settling for an overpriced used vehicle, I discovered a brand-new model still on the manufacturing line for less money. This factory-fresh car represented something special-like our own journey from preparation to activation.
Before becoming agents of God's power, we must surrender to a process ensuring we have the structural integrity to maintain quality regardless of hazardous conditions we face. Many want to be used by God without being prepared by God, but Jesus Himself underwent thirty years of preparation before His three-year ministry. Our confidence must push us beyond feeling good about ourselves to becoming solutions for the world around us.
When the car salesman tried pressuring me about the overpriced used car, I informed him I'd found the same model brand-new for less. He failed to recognize power had shifted. Similarly, after sharing my teen pregnancy testimony in 2011, elderly women approached me privately, revealing I was telling their stories too-stories shame had silenced for decades. My vulnerability showed how shame's power over teen mothers had been extracted and repurposed for liberation.
Our world overflows with problems, but rather than being discouraged, we should see this as a call to engage. I regularly ask God, "What do You need me to see and who do You need me to be?"-not just in rooms I enter but when troubling headlines appear. As solutions, we have responsibility to use our gifts to bring order where there's chaos. Praying about your role within your circle of influence gives your power a target.
Your growth season prepares you to guide others through similar pitfalls. What problem consistently catches your attention? Have you asked God about your role in the solution? Living as a solution means risking failure, but each failure carries lessons that recharge you for the next attempt. Every soul represents a solution waiting to be released into the earth.
Capítulo 8
Filling the Earth: Expanding Your Divine Purpose
When considering the creation story, I often imagined God presenting Adam and Eve with a finished paradise where they could simply enjoy leisure. But examining Genesis 1:28 reveals God always intended humans to pursue productivity. When God gave them dominion, Earth was just a seed they were charged with bringing to its full potential. While "be fruitful and multiply" is often interpreted as having children, I believe God desired them to intentionally multiply His image on Earth-not just creating offspring but modeling what receiving God's love, affirmation, validation, and purpose looks like.
Eden was only a portion of what was possible on Earth-it was their home base, beautiful and delicious, but not the entirety of their responsibility. God gave them dominion over the whole earth while placing them in a garden to tend, revealing His character: you need a solid foundation before expanding. Many of us beat ourselves up for not being further along, failing to recognize how unstable our foundations have been.
Our world appears full but remains spiritually empty. I constantly remind myself that bustling cities, busy social media, and even full churches can still lack substance. God sees beyond structures to the emptiness within souls. We fill the earth by adding our authentic, God-inspired growth into the conversation-not imitating others but breaking through with our distinctive voice. Your unique gifts can fill gaps no one else sees, like the founders of Buy Nothing communities who connected 7.5 million people worldwide in resource-sharing networks.
Completing one part of God's Genesis 1:28 command naturally sets the others in motion. When we fill empty spaces, we simultaneously subdue negative forces like isolation and consumerism. Breaking generational curses isn't about focusing on the curse itself but living in opposition to it by becoming a force that moves differently. God wanted Adam and Eve to know they had dominion over every creature they encountered-He didn't want them to fear beasts. Similarly, we face "beasts" in industries and situations that appear stronger than us, but "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." Any opposition to God's work isn't just your enemy but God's enemy too.
Capítulo 9
Joining Forces: The Power of Strategic Alliances
Businesses increasingly join forces to maximize impact and increase brand awareness, like when GoPro partnered with Red Bull to create a campaign centered on their shared value of reimagining human potential. These strategic partnerships work because they're built on shared core values rather than just filling voids. Like interior designers who don't merely fill spaces with trinkets but incorporate elements that reflect homeowners' values, successful relationships require alignment in what matters most.
Jesus himself demonstrated this principle by assembling disciples with complementary backgrounds for his larger-than-life mission-he didn't choose the first twelve people who showed up but journeyed with them first, granting them access before bestowing power. This teaches us that access itself is power, and we should observe how people handle that access before assigning them to sacred spaces in our lives.
Sarah explores how influencers, once solely online personalities sharing vlogs and unique perspectives, have moved into traditional entertainment and secured brand deals previously reserved for established celebrities. While acknowledging these opportunities, she notes this is as misleading as traditional celebrity culture-behind every successful public figure stands a support system. Influencers eventually recognize they need strategic alliances to create meaningful impact.
She compares this to a confluence in nature, where two rivers join to form a more powerful channel, like the Solimoes and Negro rivers forming the Amazon. She observes that what emerges from partnership can be so powerful that individual identities before the confluence seem small in comparison. Joining forces requires confronting fears of losing individuality, but qualifying your inner circle isn't about taking advantage of others-it's about understanding your value and establishing standards for healthy relationships. "If you force the connection," she warns, "the connection is not helping you become a force."
The Old Testament can be viewed as two rivers-humanity and divinity-attempting to create a confluence, with God longing to dwell with His people despite their inability to trust Him fully. The New Testament reveals God's determination to achieve this ultimate confluence. Rather than trying to change God's mind about us, our job is to search God's mind for His truth about us-through Scripture and by confronting the disconnects between our understanding of God and ourselves.
Capítulo 10
Spreading Your Power: The Ultimate Act of Confidence
When we share knowledge or wisdom, we're not just venting but giving part of ourselves to others. This requires discernment about who can process our sharing with empathy and wisdom. Not everyone in our lives can carry our pieces with integrity. Beyond sharing personal struggles, we have a mandate to spread our power to others. Like Jesus who awakened Peter to his potential, empowered people should empower others. Power isn't limited in supply-the more you possess, the more you can give away. True confidence isn't just how you enter a room, but how you change every room for the better.
Sarah compares impartation to jump-starting a dead car battery-aligning where you're charged with where another person is drained. This requires proximity, focusing on empowering people already within reach rather than theoretical future connections. Many people don't recognize their unique gifts, but like Jesus showing Peter that his fishing skills could bridge to the supernatural, we can help others see their routine abilities as gateways to greater impact.
While some people withhold contacts and tips to maintain their uniqueness, Sarah distinguishes between having wisdom and feeling threatened by others' growth. She advises studying people before imparting power to ensure they're positioned to receive it, and initially giving only what you can afford to lose. True giving comes from who you are, not what you expect in return-like God giving His Son as an option, not an obligation.
Spreading power doesn't always require sharing deep wounds-even everyday knowledge about finances, communication, or self-care can empower others. Being in community shortens learning curves through shared experiences. True confidence means not feeling threatened by others' access to your knowledge, recognizing that having your recipe doesn't guarantee your results.
Sarah challenges the mentality that "there's only room for one," emphasizing that Jesus multiplied His impact by empowering disciples. We must become advocates who want many to succeed, generously sharing hard-earned lessons with beginners. Observation is impartation-how we communicate and act sows seeds in those watching us, regardless of our intentions. The ultimate staying power comes not from personal achievement but from remaining connected to God while empowering others to discover their own divine purpose.
