Lauren Oliver, born Laura Schechter, came out of a household where literature was ordinary daily life. Born in Queens and raised in Westchester, New York, she grew up with two literature-professor parents and a home crowded with books, art, and imaginative play. As a child, she extended the stories she loved by writing unofficial sequels; later, that instinct hardened into a vocation. She studied literature and philosophy at the University of Chicago, then earned an MFA in creative writing from NYU. A decisive turning point came while she was working at Penguin’s Razorbill imprint: there she began writing Before I Fall, and in 2009 she left publishing to write full time.
