Colleen Hoover, born Margaret Colleen Fennell on December 11, 1979 in Sulphur Springs, Texas, was raised in Saltillo, where she spent her childhood helping on her parents’ dairy farm. From a young age, Hoover harbored a desire to become a writer, even penning her first story at the age of five. Despite her early ambitions, real-life challenges—including a turbulent family life and financial hardship—led her to pursue a practical path. She graduated with a degree in social work from Texas A&M University–Commerce and married her high school sweetheart, Heath Hoover, in 2000. The couple raised three sons while living in a trailer home, experiencing the ups and downs of modest rural life.
