Russell Kirk was an American political theorist, historian, and man of letters whose work centered on conservative thought, cultural criticism, and moral order. Best known for The Conservative Mind, he helped define postwar American conservatism and wrote more than thirty books, including The Roots of American Order and Eliot and His Age.
Russell Kirk was born in Plymouth, Michigan, in 1918 and remained deeply shaped by Midwestern place, eventually rooting much of his adult life at Piety Hill in Mecosta. He studied at Michigan State College and then at Duke University, where his work on John Randolph of Roanoke led him toward Edmund Burke, the thinker who became the central intellectual influence on his mature outlook. After Army service in World War II and teaching at Michigan State, he went to the University of St. Andrews, where research on the lineage of British and American conservative thought earned him a doctor of letters. That manuscript became The Conservative Mind in 1953, the book that made him nationally prominent and helped define postwar American conservatism as a historical tradition rather than a merely partisan label.
