Geboren: May 27, 1931 – Chicago, Illinois, United States
Philip Kotler is an American marketing scholar and consultant whose work focuses on strategic marketing, consumer behavior, and market-driven management. A longtime Kellogg School professor, he is best known for Marketing Management and numerous business books. Often called the “father of modern marketing,” his ideas have shaped marketing education and practice worldwide.
Philip Kotler was born in Chicago on May 27, 1931, and his earliest exposure to commerce came through his parents’ neighborhood store, where the realities of demand, pricing, and customer behavior were part of everyday life. He began in an accounting and law program at DePaul University, then turned toward economics at the University of Chicago, earning an M.A. in 1953, followed by a Ph.D. at MIT in 1956. Postdoctoral work in mathematics at Harvard and behavioral science at Chicago sharpened the interdisciplinary cast of his thinking. After a brief period teaching at Roosevelt University, he joined Northwestern in 1962, chose marketing over managerial economics, and spent more than half a century helping make the field more analytical and academically rigorous; he is now Professor Emeritus at Kellogg.
