Born: May 20, 1898 – Ballydehob, County Cork, Ireland
Joseph Murphy was an Irish-born American New Thought minister and self-help author whose work focused on affirmative thinking, spirituality, and the subconscious mind. He was best known for The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, a mid-twentieth-century bestseller that sold millions of copies and was translated into seventeen languages.
Joseph Murphy was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1898 and came of age in a largely Catholic culture before leaving for the United States. Trained in chemistry, he worked as a pharmacist, later served in the U.S. Army in that role, and after the war turned more fully toward religion, philosophy, and New Thought. That movement from scientific training to metaphysical teaching became the defining turning point of his life. By the late 1940s and early 1950s, he was established as an independent minister in Los Angeles, where the size of his following pushed his Sunday services into the Wilshire Ebell Theatre. Radio broadcasts widened his audience well beyond the church and helped make him a recognizable public speaker as well as an author.
