Joseph Campbell was an American scholar and writer renowned for his work in comparative mythology and comparative religion. Best known for "The Hero with a Thousand Faces," he introduced the concept of the monomyth or "hero's journey," influencing fields from literature to film. His books have sold millions and been translated worldwide, notably shaping modern storytelling.
Joseph Campbell was born in New York City in 1904, the first child of a middle-class Roman Catholic family. Fascinated by mythology from a young age, Campbell spent hours reading about Native American cultures and visiting the American Museum of Natural History, where totem poles and artifacts fueled his imagination and curiosity. He attended Dartmouth initially but soon transferred to Columbia University, where he majored in English and medieval literature. After completing his master’s degree, Campbell continued his studies in Paris and Munich, delving into Old French, Sanskrit, modern art, and depth psychology, absorbing influences from prominent figures like James Joyce, Thomas Mann, Sigmund Freud, and Carl Jung.
