Born: August 02, 1942 – Lima, Lima Province, Peru
Isabel Allende is a Chilean-American novelist whose fiction blends family saga, history, and magical realism, often exploring memory, exile, and women’s lives. Best known for The House of the Spirits, she has published numerous bestselling books translated into more than 40 languages and received honors including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Isabel Allende was born in Lima on August 2, 1942, to Chilean parents and spent her childhood between Santiago, Bolivia, and Lebanon before returning to Chile to finish secondary school. That mobile upbringing, along with life inside a large, tradition-bound family, later fed the emotional weather of her fiction. Before becoming an internationally known novelist, she worked for the UN’s FAO in Santiago, co-founded the feminist magazine Paula, edited the children’s magazine Mampato, and became a familiar television interviewer and humor host in Chile.
