Raised in Oakland, California, he was introduced to investing unusually early: at seven, his grandmother Rose helped him buy a share of McDonald’s, an experience he has repeatedly described as formative. He later studied social sciences and communication at the University of Southern California, graduating in 1990. After a start in commercial real estate, he moved into wealth management, eventually becoming a senior vice president at Morgan Stanley and a partner in The Bach Group, where he worked with affluent clients while sharpening the plainspoken style that would define his public work.
