Born: July 19, 1954 – Encino, California, United States
Daniel G. Amen is an American psychiatrist and author whose work focuses on brain health, mental wellness, ADHD, and behavioral medicine. He is best known for Change Your Brain, Change Your Life and related self-help books, and for founding Amen Clinics; several of his titles became New York Times bestsellers.
Daniel G. Amen has built a public career around the idea that psychiatry should pay closer attention to the organ it treats. After studying at the University of Maryland’s West Germany campus, Orange Coast College, and Southern California College, now Vanguard University, he earned his M.D. from Oral Roberts University, then completed internship and psychiatric training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii. A key turning point came even earlier, during his years as an infantry medic and X-ray technician, when he adopted the practical habit of asking what could be learned by actually looking. After later serving as Chief of Mental Health at Fort Irwin, he opened the first Amen Clinic in Northern California in 1989 and began building a brain-centered psychiatric practice around SPECT imaging.
