This kicked off difficult months for Son as the Vision Fund's other investments faltered. His planned sequel fund collapsed, and activist investor Elliott Management pressured SoftBank to sell assets. Just as WeWork was attempting to slim down and become profitable under new CEO Sandeep Mathrani, the coronavirus pandemic hit. WeWork's defining features-social interaction, high density, and flexible leases-became severe liabilities. Tenants canceled memberships, investors feared bankruptcy, and WeWork's bonds plunged to 30 cents on the dollar. The company broke leases globally, paying millions in penalties, and reduced its workforce from over 14,000 to 5,600 by mid-2020. WeWork's dramatic rise and fall resulted from a collision of forces: Neumann's charisma and salesmanship met a financial system primed to fall under his spell. The frothy venture capital sector's obsession with eccentric founders, mutual funds rushing into startups, Saudi Arabia's investment through SoftBank, and bankers focused on IPO fees all contributed. When these forces converged, critical thinking gave way to herd mentality, allowing a real estate company to masquerade as a tech firm. Yet by late 2020, the financial markets underwent a dramatic shift. Despite WeWork's collapse, the appetite for visionary startups quickly returned. Tesla's valuation surged under Elon Musk, while companies like DoorDash and Airbnb had extraordinarily successful IPOs. The pendulum swung back to founders, with companies granting their leaders twenty or even fifty votes per share-the very governance structure that enabled Neumann's excesses. Adam Neumann didn't become the immediate billionaire he'd imagined. After fleeing to Israel in late 2019, where his mother noted "people embrace him here and it does him good," he and Rebekah rented a beachfront villa with their staff. Though wealthy from earlier cash withdrawals, he lost nearly $1 billion when SoftBank reneged on its stock purchase agreement in March 2020. By early 2021, they settled for half the original amount, with Neumann receiving special treatment: nearly $500 million in stock purchases, a five-year extension on his $430 million loan, and $50 million in cash. Restless and unable to stay out of the spotlight, he began investing in residential real estate startups, determined to sell another vision of explosive growth to investors-proving that in Silicon Valley, second acts are always possible, and memories are remarkably short.
