Frustrated by constant accusations of pedophilia and "fuck u/spez" comments flooding his inbox, Huffman secretly edited user comments, replacing his username with those of The_Donald moderators. When the community team discovered these unexplained edits, they panicked, believing the site had been hacked. Huffman confessed on Slack: "I did it." Though he quickly posted an apology on The_Donald, the incident (dubbed "Spezgiving") caused significant internal distress. Despite personally despising r/The_Donald, Huffman maintained that the controversial subreddit should be allowed to exist on Reddit. Though the community regularly pushed boundaries and had broken many site rules by some interpretation, Huffman believed shutting it down would be harmful both for Reddit and for the United States. With Reddit reaching approximately one-third of all Americans monthly, Huffman recognized the platform's growing influence.

Reddit's Billion-Dollar Future

In summer 2017, Reddit completed a new funding round that valued the company at $1.8 billion, officially making it a "unicorn." The $200 million round included investors like Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Fidelity Investments, though Advance Publications remained the majority shareholder. The site had grown to become the fourth most popular website in the United States behind only Google, YouTube, and Facebook, with over 300 million monthly visitors according to internal metrics. Reddit had multiplied its revenue five times since Huffman's return, with plans to further diversify revenue streams beyond advertising and Reddit Gold. Huffman's three primary goals were increasing daily active users, boosting engagement/diversity/inclusion, and growing revenue. While the company's future path remained open, Huffman acknowledged the possibility of eventually conducting an IPO to provide a payday for employees who had received stock. By spring 2017, Reddit was undertaking a comprehensive redesign dubbed "Reddit 4.0"-an inside joke referencing Digg 4.0's catastrophic redesign that had once benefited Reddit. Led by designers Diego Perez and Benjamin Rush, the project aimed to modernize Reddit's dated interface while carefully "preserving the spirit" of the platform. Huffman insisted on maintaining Reddit's characteristically cluttered, imperfect aesthetic, telling designers to "take a chisel to this and distress it a little bit" when mock-ups appeared too clean. In April 2017, Reddit's senior project manager Josh Wardle created "Place" for April Fools' Day-a collaborative million-pixel canvas where users could place one colored pixel every few minutes. The experiment became a massive social phenomenon with communities organizing to create elaborate designs, wage territorial battles, and collaborate on complex artwork. Over 72 hours, more than a million users placed 16.5 million pixels, creating everything from national flags to memes to art reproductions. The canvas evolved constantly as communities formed alliances and fought for space, demonstrating Reddit's unique capacity for emergent collaboration. By late 2017, Reddit had grown to nearly 300 employees and was experiencing unprecedented stability. August and September passed without any major community flare-ups-the first autumn in five years without Reddit "nearly strangling itself out of existence." The $200 million funding round seemed to give Huffman a new sense of calm and strength. Some of Reddit's formerly toxic communities were being reclaimed and transformed with humor. The subreddit r/WhitePolitics, once filled with racist content, was repurposed to show photographs of white power generators. Similarly, r/Trannys became about car transmissions, r/stormfront about meteorology, r/whites about shades of white paint, and r/faggots featured photos of bundles of branches. These witty transformations represented a small countermovement against hate speech on the platform. As Reddit approached its teenage years, it had evolved from a simple link-sharing site created by two college friends into a complex digital ecosystem reflecting both humanity's greatest potential for collaboration and its darkest impulses. The platform that began with fake accounts named after furniture pieces had become a digital town square where presidents conducted Q&As, social movements organized, and communities formed around every conceivable interest-for better and sometimes for worse. Through all its transformations, Reddit remained true to its original vision: to be the front page of the internet, where users decide what matters.
