Fernando António Nogueira Pessoa (1888–1935) foi um poeta e escritor modernista português cuja obra-prima publicada postumamente, O Livro do Desassossego, permanece como uma das explorações mais profundas da literatura sobre a consciência e a identidade. Este diário filosófico, escrito ao longo de duas décadas através do semi-heterónimo Bernardo Soares, capta temas de solidão existencial, a fragmentação do eu e a natureza da realidade com uma profundidade introspetiva notável.

Pessoa passou a maior parte da sua vida a trabalhar como tradutor comercial em Lisboa, enquanto revolucionava a literatura portuguesa através da criação de mais de 70 heterónimos — personas literárias plenamente realizadas com filosofias, estilos e biografias distintas.

Durante a sua vida, publicou apenas uma coleção de poesia em português, Mensagem (1933), e três volumes de poesia em inglês, morrendo, no entanto, virtualmente desconhecido em 1935. A sua abordagem inovadora à identidade e à autoria antecipou a literatura pós-moderna, e o crítico literário Harold Bloom reconheceu-o mais tarde como um dos apenas 26 escritores que definem os parâmetros da literatura ocidental. O Livro do Desassossego foi traduzido para inúmeras línguas e continua a cativar leitores em todo o mundo com a sua meditação intemporal sobre a condição humana.
