The symphony builds to a crescendo as Adam steps forth-magnificent, like Michelangelo's David. Yet something is still missing... Eve. She is the crescendo, God's final, astonishing work. Woman. Creation comes to a finish not with Adam, but with Eve-God's masterpiece, his finishing touch. She is breathtaking, the crown of creation. Not an afterthought, but filling a place in the world nothing and no one else can fill. Eve is created because "it is not good for the man to be alone." This is staggering-even in Eden's perfection, with Adam in unbroken fellowship with God, something was missing. Eve. Woman. Femininity. Women are relational creatures to their cores. While boys battle on playgrounds, girls negotiate relationships. Women define themselves through relationships and their perceived quality-as mothers, sisters, daughters, friends. This relational nature isn't weakness but glory-reflecting God's heart. The vast desire women have for intimate relationships reveals God's own desire for relationship with us. Christianity transforms when we discover it's a great romance-God yearning to share beauty, intimacy and adventure with us. When God sets His image bearers on earth, He gives the mission to both Adam and Eve: "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and conquer it." God calls Eve an ezer kenegdo-poorly translated as "helper" or "companion." In the Old Testament, ezer is used twenty other times-always describing God himself when you desperately need Him. A better translation would be "lifesaver." Beauty is not just important to God-it is His essence. The created world overflows with beauty that's not primarily functional but gloriously lavish. Beauty speaks, saying "All shall be well." It invites us in, nourishes our souls, comforts the wounded, inspires greatness, and transcends the ordinary-pointing to eternity. A woman's beauty does this most profoundly because she is incarnate and personal. A woman bears God's image especially in her mystery-not something forever unknowable but something to be explored. As God wants to be sought after, so a woman's soul and sexuality require pursuit. She is not a problem to be solved but a wonder to be enjoyed. Every woman has a beauty to unveil-every woman-because she bears God's image. This beauty isn't something to acquire through salons or surgery; it's an essence given at her creation.

In Eden, we were "naked and unashamed"-simply glorious. Then came the Fall. Eve was convinced God was holding out on her, that she couldn't trust His heart, and needed to take matters into her own hands. Adam failed too, standing passively by without intervention-a pattern men repeat daily. The consequences were devastating: women received a curse of relational heartache, the urge to control (especially men), and male dominance. The author examines how controlling women have forsaken their femininity. They refuse vulnerability, kill their hearts' longing for intimacy, and relate to others from self-protection rather than love. These women don't trust others to drive their cars, help in kitchens, or make decisions. She used alcohol, drugs, and relationships with men to numb her pain, convincing herself she was at least "wanted for something, if only for a night." During college travels in Europe, Stasi was sexually assaulted in Italy and later raped in France. Rather than feeling rage, she experienced shame and self-loathing, believing she somehow deserved the assaults. Every woman's story contains this theme: assault on her heart. Whether through obvious abuse or subtle neglect, the wounds continue into adulthood, all answering her core Question with the same devastating message. The history of women reveals a disturbing pattern of global assault on femininity. From Sudanese women being raped during civil conflicts, to Chinese foot-binding practices that crippled women for life, to Jewish women being treated as property, to various cultural proverbs diminishing female worth-the evidence is overwhelming. Female genital mutilation continues today, sexual violence against women and girls is rampant, and over a million girls are sold into sex trafficking yearly. This universal assault on femininity cannot be understood apart from spiritual forces. Satan specifically targeted Eve in Eden not merely because she was weaker, but because she uniquely embodies two things he despises: the Beauty of God and life-giving power. Eve incarnates God's glory in a way that provokes Satan's jealousy, as he himself fell because of pride in his own beauty. Additionally, women give birth and nurture life physically, emotionally, and spiritually-the opposite of Satan's kingdom of death. John confesses his initial reluctance to co-author this book, recognizing his discomfort with delving deeply into women's inner worlds. This reluctance reflects most men's fear of failure-they worry they won't have what it takes to help women navigate their complex emotional landscapes. This leads to an unspoken settlement in relationships: "I'm not coming any closer, but I won't leave." While not letting men off the hook for their responsibility, we must recognize that the assault on femininity is part of something larger-the most wicked force the world has known. The Enemy bears special hatred for Eve, having arranged assaults and driven the message of wounds deep into women's hearts. In contrast, God's heart toward women is revealed in Isaiah 62: He will not remain silent until women's righteousness shines like dawn. No longer will they be called Deserted or Desolate, but Hephzibah ("my delight is in her").

Healing the Wound: The Path to Restoration

He will do everything to rescue them and set their hearts free. While many Christians understand Christ came to ransom us from sin through his blood, there's more to his mission. Jesus himself pointed to Isaiah 61:1-3 when announcing his purpose: to bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim freedom for captives, and release prisoners from darkness. This central mission is about restoration-giving back hearts and setting people free, bestowing beauty where there was devastation, joy in places of sorrow, and praise in exchange for despair. God's curse on Eve wasn't cruelty but salvation. After the Fall, something in Eve's heart shifted-a mistrust of God and resolution to find life on her own terms. God must thwart these self-redemptive attempts until, wounded and aching, women turn to him alone for rescue. As Hosea 2:6-7 describes, God blocks paths with thornbushes and walls women in so they cannot find their way through self-salvation. Women construct lives of safety, avoiding vulnerability while seeking places to be enjoyed or needed. Healing begins when they repent of these self-protective ways and let them go. As Frederick Buechner notes, steeling oneself against life's harshness prevents being opened up and transformed by something more wonderful. Christ doesn't force himself upon us but knocks, waiting for permission to enter our wounded places. We've locked away our brokenness-shutting doors to painful rooms in our hearts-but this never brings healing. Jesus asks to enter these places, knocking through our loneliness and sorrows, waiting for us to give him access to our broken hearts. The healing process begins with a simple invitation: "Yes, Jesus, yes. I invite you in. Come to my heart in these shattered places." Our wounds brought messages that felt true because they were delivered with such pain-"You're worthless," "You're not a woman," "You're too much and not enough." We made agreements with these lies, creating vows that locked Jesus out. Healing requires renouncing these agreements: "Jesus, forgive me for embracing these lies. This is not what you have said of me. You said I am your daughter, your beloved. I renounce the agreements I made with these messages all these years." Women spend enormous energy "keeping it together," suppressing pain to maintain appearances. But grief is good-it heals our hearts. Let the tears come for the little girl who was lost, the teenage girl who was rejected, the woman whose life has been hard and lonely. Tears validate that the wound mattered. You mattered. Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling. Bitterness and unforgiveness are chains that keep us captive to our wounds. Forgiveness doesn't say "It didn't matter"; it says "It was wrong. It hurt me deeply. And I release you." After turning from self-redemptive strategies, opening our hearts, renouncing agreements, and forgiving those who harmed us, we simply ask Jesus to heal us. Like Melissa, who had vowed to be "tough, hard like a rock," we can experience Jesus finding the shaking little girl, unclenching her fists, taking her hand, and telling her she doesn't need to be strong. Every little girl was made to live with a father who loves her unconditionally. Our understanding of God as Father often comes through the lens of our earthly fathers. For many women, this means seeing God as distant, aloof, unavailable, or hard to please. But there's a core part of our hearts made for a Daddy's strong and tender love. We must ask God to reveal himself as our true Father, to come to the deepest places of our hearts and show us what we mean to him.

God desires to romance us personally, to heal our hearts through His intimate love. This chapter begins with Stasi's encounter with God calling her "Darling" during a nighttime walk, confirmed later through Scripture. A woman becomes beautiful when she knows she's loved-without it, something wilts like an unwatered flower. But with pursuit, her countenance becomes radiant, as seen in characters like Fran in Strictly Ballroom or Adrian in Rocky. This romance doesn't need to wait for a man; God longs to bring this into our lives himself. Women long to be loved in a way unique to our femininity-we're wired for romance. God wants to move us beyond childlike "Jesus loves me" to experiencing His passionate love through verses like "You have stolen my heart." This fierce passion, not mere obedience, carries persecuted Christians through martyrdom. For the root of all holiness is Romance. The Bible's metaphors for our relationship with God ascend in intimacy-from potter/clay to shepherd/sheep to father/child to friends. Most breathtaking is when God calls Himself our Lover (Bridegroom) and us His bride-the pinnacle of redemption. God has been wooing us since childhood, writing Romance not just on our hearts but throughout creation. Every song we love, every moving memory, has been given by the One pursuing us from our first breath. God's romancing is immensely personal, scripted for each heart uniquely. John received a whale appearing impossibly close to shore during a solitary beach walk. Stasi later asked for her own whale, but instead discovered first one beautiful starfish, then around the next bend, hundreds in various colors and sizes. Her heart exploded with joy, recognizing God's unique, intimate gift tailored perfectly for her. He has many such gifts for each of us, if only we'll ask, "Jesus, how are you romancing me now?" God wants from you what you want from him-to be loved, to be known as only lovers can know each other. He desires intimacy with the real you, not the person you think you should be. As George MacDonald revealed, there is a chamber in God's heart only you can fill. You overwhelm his heart with "one glance of your eyes." He wants to share your days, decisions, desires and disappointments. In the story of Martha and Mary, Jesus identifies the "one thing needed"-a captivated, adoring heart that responds to God's love with worship. Women minister something unique to God's heart. It was women who anointed Jesus with expensive perfume, washed his feet with tears, stayed at the cross until the end, and first worshipped the risen Lord. These acts of extravagant feminine worship deeply moved Jesus. Your worship brings him immense pleasure and ministers to his heart in ways only you can. You were made for this romance, and only Jesus can offer it consistently and deeply.

Beauty offers mercy rather than judgment, speaks from desire rather than demand, and invites others to life by being vulnerable. Just as a man's deepest fear is offering strength where he might fail, a woman's greatest fear is offering beauty where it might be rejected. Our Question is, "Am I lovely?" and rejection answers "No." This is why we hide, strive, and control-we've given way to fear. God calls us to "repentance and rest" and "quietness and trust," turning to Him when doubt grips us. Offering our true selves feels vulnerable, even scary, but that's the right path. As we become women of substance, our hearts grow in their capacity to love, desire, and live. This means being honest with Jesus about our sorrows, desires, dreams, and fears. We must be willing to suffer, for women of stunning beauty are those whose hearts have been enlarged by suffering. They've said "Yes" when the world says "No," loved without demanding love in return, and refused to numb their pain. Every woman possesses captivating beauty, but for most it's been buried, wounded, and held captive. We cultivate beauty by tending to our hearts as a master gardener tends her work. Our hearts need to feed on beauty-times of solitude, silence, refreshment, and rest. We need to listen to God's voice and follow His nudges. Beauty doesn't diminish with time but deepens and increases.

Warrior Princesses: The Fierce Side of Femininity

Women are warriors too, possessing a mighty fierceness set in their hearts by God. Though often portrayed as "Damsels in Distress," women throughout history have risen up to defend their families, land, and honor. Like Eowyn in The Return of the King who slays her enemy fighting as a woman, we are called to join the Greatest Battle for human hearts. Redeemed women of God have tender hearts, backbones of steel, and hands trained for battle. There is something incredibly fierce in a woman's heart that must be recognized, honored, and trained. Spiritual warfare is real. Stasi discovered this when she began commanding recurring dizzy spells to leave in Jesus' name. Though the attacks initially increased in frequency and intensity, by standing firm in faith and persistent prayer, she eventually gained complete victory over something she had lived with for decades. This experience trained her hands and heart for battle, revealing how we often accept as normal what is actually spiritual opposition. Stasi struggled with depression most of her life, even attempting suicide at age ten. After her second child, she felt lost at sea-filled with self-doubt, anger, shame and worthlessness. When progress stalled, her counselor suggested antidepressants. Though stigmatized in church circles, medication helped address the chemical imbalance in her body, just as counseling addressed her soul. But complete healing required engaging her spirit through spiritual warfare. By addressing all three aspects-body, soul, and spirit-and commanding the spirit of depression to leave through prayer, she finally experienced victory, release, healing and restoration. Another common enemy in women's relationships is a spirit of accusation. We often feel we're a disappointment to others or that they disapprove of us. After interactions, we're plagued by a sense of failing or irritation, leading to shame and isolation. This is exactly what Satan schemes for-to ruin our relationships. Ladies, as the Bride of Christ, you are a warring bride. Often the hardest person to fight for is yourself, but you must. Your heart is needed. Without you being present and engaged, much will be lost. Women need to fight too. Though men are warriors, God desires women's spirits to rise up in his strength as well. Spiritual warfare trains us for our future roles ruling with Jesus. It's not that we're abandoned or alone-the battle is the Lord's. Jesus won the decisive victory, but we must apply it. Christianity isn't passive but an invasion of a Kingdom. We must learn to enforce Christ's victory because we too were created to reign. A warrior princess looks like Joan of Arc, Mother Teresa, Esther, Mary of Bethany-women who were wise, cunning, strong, beautiful, courageous, victorious, and very present. Women warriors are both strong and tender. Offering vulnerability requires incredible strength, rooted in knowing whose we are and therefore who we are. We war through offering our hearts wisely, living in God's love, inviting others to rest, and alluring those in our lives to God's heart. But we also put on God's armor daily to stand against darkness.

An Irreplaceable Role: Your Unique Contribution

The story of Cinderella turns upon an invitation. Before the courier from the Palace arrives, Cinderella's life seems set in stone-forever a washerwoman, her enemies always having the upper hand, a life of noble suffering. Then the Prince's invitation arrives, awakening her longings, enraging her enemies, and changing her life forever. Like Cinderella, Mary the mother of Jesus received an invitation that required immense courage to accept, setting off a chain of opposition but ultimately changing the Kingdom forever. Your heart as a woman is such an invitation-a call to Romance, to beauty, and to adventure as the ezer the world desperately needs. When history is finally told rightly, it will be clear that women have been essential to every great move of God. From Moses' mother who saved his life, to Rahab who secured the Hebrews' entry into the Promised Land, to Esther who saved her people from genocide, to the women who supported Jesus' ministry and stayed with him when men fled, to those like Lydia and Priscilla who risked everything for the early church. Most importantly, the salvation of mankind rested on a teenage girl's courage. Your existence as a woman is proof that you have an irreplaceable role to play. God calls women to diverse and unique roles, like wildflowers in a field. Jeanine, a missionary in Colombia's notorious prisons, brings Christ's love to violent inmates, transforming a place where two murders occurred daily. Carol, an Ivy League graduate, chose motherhood over career advancement, discovering holiness in the hidden life of raising her son. Each woman offers something irreplaceable that only she can give. Eve is God's relational specialist, given to keep relationships a priority in a world where men let these things slip and our Enemy despises connection. Women are needed to protect relationships and bring them back to center stage where they belong. Starting in our circles of intimacy, we must ask how to offer our beauty, fierce devotion and love as ezers. No one can be to the people in your life who you can be to them. Your life is part of a larger movement-the Kingdom of God advancing on earth. Though messy and opposed, this fellowship of the Ransomed being Restored needs your irreplaceable feminine contribution. While women haven't always felt welcomed to bring their gifts to churches unless within narrow parameters, understanding God's design for women must come before interpreting roles. A woman's contributions will be uniquely feminine, and the roles she plays should fit her feminine heart. In your farthest sphere of influence, you have something essential to offer the World. Whether through a notable career or hidden life well lived, some women like Lydia the entrepreneur or Deborah the advisor are called to the marketplace. The crucial issue is this: it is as a woman you must live there. God's invitations come through many channels-circumstances, others who see something in us, but ultimately through the passions set deep within our hearts. What makes you angry? What brings you to tears? As God restores your heart, you'll recover long-lost passions and dreams, finding yourself drawn to some vision for making the world better. Responding to Jesus' invitations often feels like the riskiest thing we've ever done. Ask Rahab, Esther, Ruth, Mary. The life of God's friends involves profound risk-loving others, stepping out, offering, speaking up. We fear stepping out because we know it might not go well, and our history of wounds screams at us to play it safe. We can only risk when we're resting in God's love, having received his verdict that we are chosen and dearly loved. To live as an authentic, ransomed woman means being real and present in this moment. We cannot have intimacy with God or anyone else if we stay hidden, offering only who we think we ought to be. We cannot play our ezer role if we remain bound by shame and fear. You have only one life-it would be best to live your own. You are a woman, an image bearer of God, the Crown of Creation, chosen and dearly loved. You are dangerous in your beauty and life-giving power. And you are needed-to awaken to God and to the desires he placed within you. Jesus extends his hand to you in invitation: "May I have this dance... every day of your life?"
