A healthy media diet consists of three types of sources:
1. Stars: Rare sources worth reading thoroughly that consistently provide useful information
2. Scans: Sources that reliably deliver some relevant information, comprising the majority of your lineup
3. Targets: Sources used for a single specific purpose, like monitoring competitors
The lineup should be minimal-drawing on as few sources as possible while keeping you fully informed. Maintaining this diet requires constantly asking "Is this worth my time?" at every level-from entire sources down to individual paragraphs. Skip anything that doesn't provide value.
Online sources present special challenges due to their sheer volume, leading to "Hurst's Law": An unbounded bitstream tends toward irrelevance. The bit-literate user must habitually say "no" to most content.
While traditional media sources are easily identified (newspapers print their names on every page, TV shows announce themselves), online sources often present challenges in determining their origin and reliability. The domain in a URL (what appears after "http" and "www" but before the next slash) identifies the true source of content. Fraudulent emails often contain misleading URLs that include legitimate company names but actually point to different domains.
When sharing articles, use a proper bit-literate clipping format that includes the URL (most important for source verification), publication name, date, title, and author, followed by the complete article text. This allows recipients to verify sources and saves them time. While bookmarking URLs is common, saving only the link risks losing access if the article moves behind a paywall or the website changes. Storing the complete text in clip format guarantees future access.

Unlike traditional film photography where each shot costs money, digital photography allows for taking many photos at no additional cost. Always take at least two shots of any subject, try different angles, and experiment with flash settings.
