Three principles form a logical syllogism: without virtue, civilization dies; without religion, virtue dies; therefore without religion, civilization dies. History proves the first principle-civilizations thrive in proportion to their virtue and decay when virtue decays. The second principle is illuminated by Dostoyevsky's saying that without God, everything becomes permissible. Nietzsche and Sartre, consistent atheists, agree with this premise. Moses puts the issue simply: "Choose life"-God's life of grace, the life of virtue for our souls, and the life of peace and civilization for our bodies.
