Allen Frances

Nascido: February 14, 1942 – New York City, New York, United States

Allen Frances is an American psychiatrist and author focused on psychiatric diagnosis, mental health policy, and the risks of overdiagnosis. He is best known for chairing the DSM-IV Task Force and for books such as Saving Normal and Essentials of Psychiatric Diagnosis, which made him a prominent critic of diagnostic inflation.

Biografia e Jornada do Autor

Allen Frances built his career at the intersection of psychiatry, diagnosis, and public argument. Growing up in New York, he was steered toward medicine by a practical family sense of security, but he has said the deeper attraction was intellectual: as a teenager he was already reading Freud, philosophers, and Dostoevsky, and psychiatry seemed to unite the humanities, science, and the wish to help people. He earned his M.D. at the State University of New York in Brooklyn in 1967, completed psychiatric residency by 1971, later chaired the DSM-IV task force, and went on to become professor and chairman emeritus at Duke.
