Best quote from Weaponized Reputation: Surviving the Intimidated Man's Smear Campaign

    “

The smear campaign is a confession of his own weakness; he is terrified of your strength and voice, and by trying to rewrite your reputation, he is desperately trying to rewrite his own shame.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The status incongruity hypothesis suggests that when a woman demonstrates high levels of competence, independence, or agency, she is perceived as violating traditional gender hierarchies. For some men, particularly those with narcissistic traits, this violation feels like a personal threat to their identity and ego. To regain a sense of control and dominance, they may resort to character assassination to drag the woman’s social standing down, effectively punishing her for her success or assertiveness.

DARVO stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It is a calculated psychological strategy where a perpetrator denies their own abusive or threatening behavior, attacks the character of the person they are targeting, and then claims that they are actually the victim of the other person's "instability" or "aggression." This tactic is often supported by "grooming" an audience—such as friends or colleagues—over time so they are predisposed to believe the perpetrator's false narrative when a conflict arises.

"Flying monkeys" are third parties—such as mutual friends, family members, or colleagues—whom the narcissist recruits to help carry out the smear campaign. These individuals are often manipulated through "sob stories" or "fake concern" into becoming proxies for the abuse, spreading rumors and isolating the victim. They may participate because they feel like "rescuers" helping a friend, or sometimes out of fear that they will become the next target if they do not stay on the narcissist's good side.

The Gray Rock Method is a strategy for dealing with a narcissist by becoming as uninteresting and unresponsive as a "boring gray rock." By refusing to provide the emotional "supply" of anger, fear, or defensive explanations, the victim makes themselves an unsatisfying target. Experts recommend this because defending yourself to a narcissist or their "flying monkeys" often fuels their narrative; staying neutral and boring eventually causes the attacker to lose interest or overplay their hand, making their own obsession obvious to others.

The legal system is often weaponized through Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs), where an abuser sues a victim for defamation to buy their silence and exhaust their financial resources. This "litigation as an extension of abuse" inverts the narrative, allowing the perpetrator to portray themselves as the victim in a courtroom. Furthermore, the legal process can be re-traumatizing as it may grant the abuser access to the victim's intimate information, such as private texts and medical records, through the disclosure process.
