Located hundreds of miles off the coast of Brazil, it required drilling through kilometers of water, rock, and unstable salt layers. Since commercial production began in 2010, the field has reached a milestone of 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent in cumulative production, making it a cornerstone of offshore drilling.
Extracting pre-salt oil at the Tupi field is an immense engineering feat involving extreme depths and pressure. Operations take place under two kilometers of water and another two kilometers of rock, followed by a shifting, two-kilometer-thick layer of salt.
