Since being declared commercial in 2010, it has become a cornerstone of the Brazil energy market, demonstrating that deepwater oil production at this scale is both physically possible and highly productive.
Petroleum engineering at the Tupi field involves solving a complex puzzle. To reach the oil, engineers must drill through two kilometers of ocean water, two kilometers of solid rock, and a daunting two-kilometer-thick shifting layer of plastic salt. This pre-salt layer acts as a barrier to the geological treasure chest below. As of August 2026, the Tupi field has reached an incredible production milestone of over 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent. The field is currently pumping out approximately one million barrels of oil every single day.
