The rise of Europe wasn't some inevitable outcome; it was a result of a specific set of circumstances and choices made in the 15th century.
The nations of the 1400s

The Ming dynasty's naval capabilities in the early 1400s far surpassed those of later European explorers. While Columbus set sail with three small boats, the Chinese fleet consisted of over three hundred massive vessels, including 'treasure ships' longer than a football field. These floating cities were manned by twenty-seven thousand people, meaning Columbus’s entire fleet could have fit on the deck of just one Chinese ship.
The 15th century was defined by several established powers that were significantly more advanced than European states of the time. Key players included the Ming dynasty in the East, the rising Ottoman Empire in the Middle East, and the powerful Mali and Songhai empires in Africa. These nations created a blueprint for the modern world long before the traditional 'Age of Discovery' began in 1492.
The year 1400 is significant because it represents a moment when the world almost became globalized under non-European powers. It was a century of 'what ifs,' where the Ming dynasty made its debut on the world stage and the Ottoman Empire began its expansion. Understanding this era provides perspective on how these massive empires shaped the world before the rise of Western maritime exploration.
