Explore the birth of reason and the history of science. Learn how Pre-Socratic thinkers like Thales moved from divine myths to natural patterns and the kosmos.

The Pre-Socratic tradition represents the exact moment the Western mind decided that the world was a 'kosmos'—an ordered, natural arrangement that is inherently intelligible to the human mind.
Pre-Socratic Philosophy focusing on cosmogony and the origins of the universe—specifically how the world first emerged according to early Greek thinkers.

The first scientists were a group of radical thinkers from the trade port of Miletus, including Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes. About twenty-six centuries ago, these individuals shifted the focus of human inquiry from divine myths to physical processes. By looking for patterns in nature rather than signs from gods, they established the foundation for what we now recognize as the history of science and Western philosophy.
In the context of Pre-Socratic philosophy, the 'arche' refers to the fundamental starting point or the primary principle of all things. Thales identified this foundation as water, while Anaximenes believed it was air. Anaximander took a more abstract approach, proposing the 'Boundless' as the source. This concept was central to their attempt to explain the origin of the world through an intelligible, natural arrangement.
Pre-Socratic thinkers transformed the human perspective by introducing the concept of the 'kosmos,' an ordered and natural arrangement that the human mind can understand. Instead of attributing lightning or seasonal changes to divine moods, they asked 'how does this work?' rather than 'who did this?' This pivotal shift marked the birth of reason, moving humanity away from cosmic battles toward a logical study of the physical world.
