I am 26, I had an incredibly fulfilling, challenging, and sometimes very stressful career then got suddenly laid off. I have trouble with weight gain- when I am stimulated and have direction o tend to lose weight and I am prescribed bupropion and adderall. I am applying to jobs a little bit, and I do best when I am busy but not working like 20 hours a day. Where should I go in life? I always find it hard to keep a routine and make myself clean my apartment and exercise.

Jackson: Hey there, welcome to the show! I was talking with a friend recently who got laid off from her job, and she mentioned something that really surprised me—she started gaining weight almost immediately. And it wasn't just from stress eating.
Nia: That's actually really common, Jackson. Job loss doesn't just affect our bank accounts—it hits our mental health and physical wellbeing too. The research shows that unemployment creates this perfect storm of stress hormones, disrupted routines, and sometimes even medication changes that can lead to weight gain.
Jackson: Right, and I think a lot of people don't realize that mental health and weight are so interconnected. I mean, when we look at things like depression, anxiety, or even ADHD medications, they can all influence our weight in ways we might not expect.
Nia: Exactly. And what's fascinating is that establishing structure becomes incredibly important during these transitions. When you lose that daily work routine, you also lose those built-in guardrails for your eating patterns, sleep schedule, and even your exercise habits.
Jackson: That makes so much sense. You know, I think there's this tendency to blame ourselves when we gain weight during stressful periods, but there are actually all these biological and psychological factors at play. Let's explore how someone can navigate this challenging situation while protecting both their mental and physical health.
