Cette alliance a marqué la naissance de l'Irlande anglo-normande, bien que ce transfert de pouvoir par héritage ait été totalement illégal selon le droit irlandais de l'époque, qui privilégiait la propriété collective du clan.

Il a débarqué avec 4 000 hommes pour affirmer sa souveraineté, devenant le premier roi d'Angleterre à fouler le sol irlandais. Il a utilisé la religion comme justification, s'appuyant sur une bulle papale l'autorisant à "réformer" l'Église irlandaise, et a forcé les chefs locaux et les seigneurs normands à lui prêter allégeance, transformant une expédition de mercenaires en une colonisation d'État.
