L'identité irlandaise est en réalité le fruit d'un brassage permanent entre les premiers fermiers, les migrants européens et, plus tard, les apports romains et scandinaves.

    Bien que les chroniques monastiques les décrivent comme des pillards barbares, les Vikings ont profondément transformé l'Irlande en y introduisant l'urbanisme et le commerce international à grande échelle. Ils sont les fondateurs des principales villes portuaires comme Dublin, Cork et Waterford.
