Explore the history of philosophy in this speed-run, starting with Thales of Miletus and the Presocratics' shift from mythology to rational inquiry and logic.

Philosophy is the transition from accepting a story to demanding a reason; it is the birth of the 'why' that drives every scientific and logical inquiry you make today.
The whole history of philosophy, speed-run

Thales of Miletus is recognized as the first thinker to move away from mythological explanations toward rational ones. Over twenty-five hundred years ago, he proposed that water was the fundamental substance of reality, or the arche. This shift was monumental because it replaced stories about angry gods with a systematic study of the cosmos based on argumentation. By seeking a single underlying principle for the world, Thales initiated the birth of scientific and logical inquiry that still drives modern thought.
Heraclitus and Parmenides represent a fundamental tension in Western thought regarding the nature of reality. Heraclitus famously argued that the world is in constant flux, suggesting that one cannot step into the same river twice because everything is always changing. In contrast, Parmenides insisted that true reality is unchanging and eternal. This debate between change and stability established the foundation for philosophical exploration and empirical theory, influencing how we understand the functioning of the world today.
In the context of Presocratic philosophy, the 'arche' refers to the search for a single underlying principle or fundamental substance of reality. Thales of Miletus was the first to propose such a principle by identifying water as the source of all things. This pursuit of an arche marked the transition from accepting religious lore to demanding a reason for how the world functions. It represents the invention of empirical theory and the beginning of the systematic study of the cosmos through rational inquiry.
