Understanding this arc helps you see the invisible architecture of your own mind—the hidden assumptions about law, science, and morality that you’ve inherited from people who lived thousands of years ago.
A comprehensive overview of Western philosophy, tracing its evolution from Ancient Greek foundations through the Enlightenment and into Post-Modernism, covering major shifts in thought and key currents.

Western philosophy began in the sixth century BCE in the city of Miletus with a thinker named Thales. He moved away from mythological stories involving gods like Poseidon and Demeter, instead seeking a rational explanation for the natural world. By proposing that all things were made of a single substance, he established the tradition of philosophia, or the love of wisdom, which prioritizes reason over myth.
Thales of Miletus is recognized as the first philosopher in the Western tradition because he sought a fundamental substance to explain the variety of the world. Although he incorrectly identified this substance as water, his radical shift toward seeking logical answers rather than telling stories about the gods marked the birth of ancient Greek philosophy. His work laid the foundation for the Pre-Socratics and all subsequent Western thought.
While early Pre-Socratic philosophers focused on what the physical world was made of, Socrates introduced a major shift in the history of Western thought. He turned the philosophical lens inward, moving the focus from the composition of the universe to human ethics and morality. By asking what it means to be a good person and how one should live, Socrates transformed philosophy into a restless pursuit of self-understanding.
