Pre-Socratic thinkers were the first philosophers in Ancient Greece who shifted human understanding from myths to rational inquiry. Instead of attributing natural events to gods, they sought logical explanations for the universe's composition. This movement, led by figures like Thales and Anaximander over 2,500 years ago, laid the essential groundwork for all future scientific discovery and Western philosophical thought.
The concept of Arche refers to the search for a 'first principle' or a single substance that holds the entire cosmos together. Thales, often called the first philosopher, famously proposed that this primary substance was water. Later, Anaximander introduced the idea of the apeiron, a boundless and eternal substance, as the fundamental origin of everything in the universe.
Early Greek philosophy marked a revolutionary transition away from explaining the world through myths, such as the stories of Uranus and Gaia. Rather than viewing a storm as a god's tantrum, philosophers like Thales and Heraclitus looked for underlying principles and natural laws. This shift toward rational inquiry allowed them to explore the nature of reality through logic and observation rather than supernatural narratives.
Anaximander is known for his theory of the apeiron, an unperceivable and boundless substance that serves as the source of all things. In contrast, Heraclitus focused on the nature of change, famously arguing that everything is in a state of constant flux. He illustrated this by stating that one cannot step into the same river twice, highlighting a significant split in early philosophical thought.
