Nato: April 23, 1564 – Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England
William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor whose works—including nearly 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and several long poems—have made him the most influential writer in the English language. Known for classics such as Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet, his plays are performed worldwide and translated into every major language.
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, the eldest surviving child of John Shakespeare, a prosperous glove-maker and civic leader, and Mary Arden, from a distinguished local family. Growing up in a middle-class household, Shakespeare likely attended the local grammar school, where he received a rigorous education centered around Latin classic authors. His formative years unfolded in a town defined by rural customs, family enterprise, and his father's brief rise and subsequent decline in local prominence. At eighteen, Shakespeare wed Anne Hathaway, who was eight years his senior; the couple had three children: Susanna and twins Hamnet and Judith.
