Stephen King is an American author renowned for his work in horror, suspense, and fantasy fiction. Best known for novels such as "Carrie," "The Shining," "IT," and "The Dark Tower" series, King’s books have sold over 300 million copies worldwide and revived the horror genre, earning him major awards and global influence.
Stephen King was born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine, the younger son of Nellie Ruth and Donald King. His early life was shaped by instability after his father abandoned the family when Stephen was a toddler, leaving his mother to raise him and his older brother, David, in a succession of modest homes in Indiana, Connecticut, and finally back in Maine. King's fascination with horror was evident from childhood, both in the stories he read and those he began writing as early as age seven. By the time he graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1966 and earned his bachelor’s in English from the University of Maine in 1970, he had already published short stories in pulp magazines, demonstrating a work ethic that paired creative ambition with persistence through hardship.
