Nato: December 16, 1775 – Steventon, Hampshire, England
Jane Austen was an English novelist whose six major novels, including Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma, explore themes of social class, marriage, and the British landed gentry in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Her works are celebrated for their wit, realism, and enduring cultural influence worldwide.
Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775, in the rural parish of Steventon, Hampshire, the seventh of eight children in a family known for its intellectual engagement and lively domestic life. Her father, Reverend George Austen, was a learned clergyman who fostered an environment filled with books and stimulating conversation. Jane’s closest companion and confidante was her elder sister, Cassandra. Together the sisters attended school until a bout of illness led to their return home, where Jane’s education continued with the benefit of her father’s library and the company of her family, whose amateur theatrics and social gatherings became formative influences on her observation of character and class.
