The 2020 U.S. Commission on Civil Rights found that homicides are ten times more likely to be ruled justifiable when the shooter is white and victim is Black, with white-on-Black killings 281% more likely to be deemed "justifiable" than white-on-white killings.

The Black Church: America's Freedom Church

The Black church has served as both spiritual sanctuary and center of resistance throughout American history. The church provided crucial spaces for Black education, mutual aid, and political organization, making it a frequent target of white violence - from post-emancipation KKK burnings to the 1963 Birmingham bombing and the 2015 Charleston massacre at Emanuel A.M.E. Church. Its origins trace to enslaved Africans who, during the First Great Awakening, created an "invisible institution" of outdoor gatherings featuring liberating interpretations of Christianity. By the late 18th century, Richard Allen and Absalom Jones, after facing discrimination at white churches, founded the Free African Society in Philadelphia. This led to the establishment of independent Black churches and eventually the A.M.E. denomination in 1816, with Jarena Lee becoming its first licensed female preacher in 1819. The church fostered both peaceful and radical resistance. Denmark Vesey planned an 1822 rebellion from Charleston's A.M.E. church, while preacher Nat Turner led an 1831 uprising. Both events resulted in violent white backlash and increased restrictions on Black religious gatherings. During Jim Crow and the civil rights era, the Black church became the movement's organizational backbone, collaborating with groups like the NAACP. It provided the foundation for the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955, launching Martin Luther King Jr.'s leadership. When the Black Power movement emerged in 1966, challenging King's nonviolent approach, the National Conference of Negro Churchmen responded by addressing racial power imbalances while maintaining religious principles, influencing Cone's development of Black theology that merged church tradition with Black Power's vision.

Wesley Morris explores how Black music became central to American culture despite racial tensions. Following the 1963 Birmingham church bombing, Motown's rise exemplified Black cultural assertion, creating music that was both commercially successful and politically meaningful. When Martha and the Vandellas' "Heat Wave" reached #4 in America, Motown was redefining American music. Berry Gordy's vision wasn't to create "Black music" but "American music," following jazz artists' path beyond racial categories. Motown masterfully blended Western classical instruments with Black musical traditions, while presenting Black artists with dignity that challenged entertainment stereotypes. Black artists progressed from the margins to become cultural leaders. From soul to hip-hop, Black musical innovations now permeate American culture. This influence traces back to slavery, where music provided both practical support and spiritual transcendence. Enslaved Africans merged their percussive traditions with colonial Christian melodies. Practices like the ring shout combined rhythm and harmony in survival songs drawn from biblical narratives. Though enslavers often censored liberation texts like Exodus, these stories survived through songs in prayer houses and work settings. Post-Civil War efforts to preserve spirituals began with "Slave Songs of the United States" (1867). The Fisk Jubilee Singers, notably featuring Ella Sheppard, helped establish the American gospel tradition through their arrangements of spirituals. While Black Americans created authentic music for survival, white America developed blackface minstrelsy. Starting in the 1830s with performers like T.D. "Daddy" Rice, this became America's first popular entertainment. By the 1860s, Black performers faced a cruel paradox: achieving visibility often meant performing in blackface themselves, essentially imitating white interpretations of Black culture. Despite this complex history, music created America's truest form of integration. While minstrelsy's appropriation launched popular culture, some white artists genuinely respected and collaborated with Black musicians. The essence of Black music - its spiritual depth, distinctive rhythms, and unique expressions born from survival - remains inimitable, containing elements that transcend mere appropriation.

The Myth of Inevitable Racial Progress

President Obama's 2017 farewell address championed the myth of steady racial progress in America. Following his 2008 victory, nearly 70% of Americans expected improved race relations, with some scholars declaring racism's end. However, this narrative of continuous improvement obscures how progress and regression have always coexisted in American history. While civil rights victories marked the 1950s and '60s, they coincided with rising Black unemployment and urban unrest. The post-civil rights era brought mass incarceration and voter suppression. When Obama took office, the racial wealth gap reached historic highs. This myth of progress enabled the Supreme Court's 2013 gutting of the Voting Rights Act, leading to widespread voter suppression laws that affected subsequent elections. The propaganda of racial progress began during slavery, with enslavers claiming to improve enslaved people's lives. Even George Washington avoided confronting racial prejudice, allowing slavery to expand dramatically. The Constitution notably omitted the words "slavery" and "slave," yet the enslaved population tripled between 1810 and 1860. By the 1830s, white abolitionists promoted "uplift suasion," urging Black people to demonstrate their worthiness for freedom. This approach wrongly suggested that Black behavior, not racism, was the core problem. Abraham Lincoln exemplified the era's contradictions, opposing both slavery and racial equality. The Emancipation Proclamation, issued as a military necessity, initially freed relatively few people, while enslaved individuals largely secured their own freedom by escaping to Union lines. Post-World War II, America's segregation became a Cold War liability as the Soviet Union highlighted U.S. racism. By the 1970s, conservatives declared racism over, reframing anti-discrimination efforts as "reverse racism." The 1990s saw the rise of "color-blind" ideology, which blamed Black culture for racial disparities while dismissing systemic racism. This myth of inevitable progress masks the dual nature of America's racial history - simultaneous movements toward both inclusion and exclusion - while obscuring persistent racial inequalities in wealth, incarceration, and life expectancy.

Justice Requires Reparations

While America's dominant narrative portrays white Americans as democracy's architects, a truer origin story positions Black Americans as democracy's defenders and perfecters. Through their freedom struggle, they consistently fought to make "all men are created equal" real, even when disenfranchised and excluded. Despite civil rights reforms, wealth inequality remains the defining feature of Black life since slavery. Wealth-assets minus debt-provides security, better neighborhoods, education opportunities, and intergenerational stability. White Americans' centuries-long economic head start effectively maintains racial caste today through "race-neutral" economic barriers that replaced formal segregation. The racial wealth gap is stark: Black Americans remain the most segregated group and are five times more likely to live in high-poverty neighborhoods. By 2020, the average Black family with children held just one cent of wealth for every dollar held by white families with children. During Reconstruction, America came closest to providing restitution. In 1865, Black leaders met with federal officials in Savannah, requesting land for self-sufficiency. Sherman's Special Field Order 15 allocated 400,000 acres to freed people, but President Johnson later reversed this order, returning the land to former Confederates-a decision that profoundly shaped America's racial history. Black Americans persisted in seeking reparations across generations. From Callie House's early 1900s organization to the 2021 Tulsa Race Massacre survivors' testimony before Congress, the fight continues. Ironically, the only Americans who received government restitution for slavery were white enslavers in Washington, D.C. As William Darity explains, the racial wealth gap begins with the failure to provide the promised forty acres. Reparations aren't about punishing white Americans but fulfilling a societal obligation in a nation whose Constitution sanctioned slavery and practiced legal discrimination until recently. America owes much of its cultural identity-music, food, language, art, scientific advances, athletic achievement-to Black Americans. Yet their legacy includes disproportionate poverty, incarceration, and death alongside the lowest rates of land ownership, employment, and wealth. This unacknowledged debt continues to accrue. Having confronted this history, we can no longer hide behind national amnesia. It's time for America to pay its four-hundred-year debt and fulfill its founding ideals.
