Nacido: April 12, 1954 – Brookline, Massachusetts, United States
Jon Krakauer is an American nonfiction writer and mountaineer known for immersive reporting on wilderness, survival, disaster, and social controversy. His notable books include Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, and Under the Banner of Heaven. A longtime bestselling author, he has shaped modern narrative nonfiction through meticulous, high-stakes storytelling.
Jon Krakauer, born on April 12, 1954, in Brookline, Massachusetts, and raised in Corvallis, Oregon, came to writing through mountains rather than through a conventional newsroom path. Introduced early to climbing and wilderness travel, he studied environmental studies at Hampshire College, graduating in 1976. After college he worked as a carpenter and commercial salmon fisherman in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Colorado, shaping his life around time in the mountains. A decisive turn came after his attempt on Alaska’s Devils Thumb and the article he wrote about it for the British climbing magazine Mountain; the payment and response helped persuade him that freelance reporting could become a profession. By the early 1980s he was making a living as a writer and became closely associated with Outside, while also publishing in National Geographic, Smithsonian, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.
